What is alternative energy and what are some examples?

I need a few examples of alternative energy and what it is.

Alternative energy is a term that refers to methods of generating energy that are not the usual method (i.e. fossil fuels). There are many forms of alternative energy, but, as energy is conserved, you have to ask yourself where the energy comes from (and the answer is always "the sun"). You should always be careful when you look at energy forms, because some of them just won’t work – like the idea of putting water in your gas tank that another user has suggested (thermodynamics shows that these ideas won’t work).

The sun undergoes nuclear reactions which result in the release of photons (beams of light that have energy associated with them). Alternative energy forms just capture the energy from the sun in different ways (actually, fossil fuels also got their energy from the sun a long time ago).

Here are a few alternative energy sources and how they relate to the sun:

Bio-fuels: We can grow plants (such as algae, corn, sugar cane) which collect the photons from the sun and use the energy in the photons to create sugars. We can harvest those sugars and and turn them into liquid fuels such as ethanol.

Solar Energy: This technology directly harnesses the energy of the sun by absorbing photons through photovoltaic solar cells and which create an electrical current when they absorb a photon. Additionally, you can use the energy of the sun to thermally heat an object, which is referred to as solar-thermal energy.

Wind Energy: When the photons from the sun hit the air in the atmosphere, that energy can cause the generation of wind. We can harvest the wind energy by using turbines which spin when the wind hits them. The spinning motion is used to turn a generator which produces electricity.

Hydro-electric: When the sun hits water, it can cause the water to turn into a gas and later that gas can result in rain. If the rain occurs at a high enough elevation and gets held behind a dam, the water now possesses a high potential energy due to the energy from the sun. That energy can be turned into electrical energy by converting the potential energy of the water into kinetic energy which is then used to turn a turbine in a hydroelectric dam.

I came accross a new, proven and tested home made wind power system and solar power system which eliminates our electricity bills. It was written by a renewable energy enthusiasts Michael Harvey the diy called Earth4energy. You can get your copy to save energy and help environment while eliminating your power bills. Renewable energy?

Why doesnt the government make everything with renewable energy? why are factories and plants still using fossil fuels?

There is a lot of money behind fossil fuels in this country, and an awful lot of very rich people would lose money if fossil fuel consumption dropped to zero. A great book about this is called Big Coal; it goes through the coal industry from mining to polluting and describes the power structure that is holding up this archaic method of electric generation.

renewable energy is gaining a foothold in this country, but like anything else, it’s not going to happen overnight. Engineers are finding new ways to create and conserve electricity everyday, but it is up to the rest of us to continue demanding clean energy until the change is complete.

As for industrial uses, many industries can use renewable energy for their electric needs, but some of the high-power requirements require the extra muscle that electricity cannot always provide (at least, not yet). You aren’t going to be seeing any hybrid-electric bulldozers very soon; the technology just isn’t that strong yet.

All the same, be vigilant! Many things once said to be impossible have already been done, so I have no doubt we can find ways to eliminate pollution entirely.

Is alternative energy a pipe dream in the short run?

Should the citizens of the united states demand the government provide energy by any means until the technology and the hardware for alternative energy are ready?

I am not saying alternative sources of energy will not happen, of course they will, but we need energy now.

Get the electricity any way we can and phase out fossil fuels as alternative energy comes available.

You are correct.

Massive taxes on energy will NOT solve the problem – it will just cause more suffering for people already just trying to make ends meet.

How do Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) work?

Is it an incentive to use renewable energy?

The basic idea that people who feel bad about something can buy them to get rid of the guilt.

The way that they work is that a very small amount (much less than the subsidies and tax breaks given to politically correct energy) of money goes to those who operate a wind turbine or solar panel (or even methane gas recovery systems at landfills, sometimes things that would have to be built regardless of whether any carbon credits were sold), the amount of money that the carbon offset actually provides is really too small to actually encourage use of politically correct energy, especially when you consider how much bigger the subsidies are (and they really are over-subsidised compared to how much energy they produce).

Of course there are renewable energy credit systems that do actually help, just that they cost so much more that the frauds out compete them (and governments don’t seem too interested in keeping that sector honest, some such schemes are actually run by the government, including some that sell more renewable energy than they actually generate (in other areas of the economy the word used for that is fraud)).

The main purposes that renewable energy credits serve are to act as indulgences and to help fool people into believing that fossil fuels can be replaced without using nuclear power (which thereby prevents fossil fuels from actually being replaced and keeps the coal and oil companies in business).

What happened to all the green energy talk prior to the election?

Little has been done or is in the works. Are greenies actually realizing that there is no ready replacement for fossil fuels? Or at least nothing that the average person can affordably use. I suppose cars with a nuclear reactor could give performance as good as gas or diesel but it would cost a few million per car. Electric and hybrid cars are an expensive joke. You may as well shut off your electricity and get a horse and buggy.

Are you suggesting that Democrat Obama lied during his campaign or he’s just incompetent and not doing anything he stated he was going to do. We were supposed to be out of Afganistan by now, out of Iraq by now, the economy was supposed to be fixed by now and he’s made it significantly worse, we are supposed to be switching to green fuel and we’re not, all of the countries are supposed to love us because Democrat Obama would talk to them, Iran is supposed to stop their nuclear weapons production instead of significantly increasing it as it’s been proven they are, Guantanimo Bay was supposed to be close and terrorists put on American soil, etc., etc., etc.

Wake up to reality: Due to Democrat Obama we’ve had our first Terrorist attack on American soil since 9/11, our economy is in far worse shape due to his spending policies, we’re increasing the number of troops we have in Afganistan though not at the minimum level needed to actually protect, help and win the war, just at a level where we will loose and are far more likely to suffer longer and greater casualties. The Generals stated they needed 80,000 troops though at an absolute minimum 40,000 to do anything properly. Democrat Obama gave them 30,000 that will prolong the war without giving us enough strength to win. I could go on and on though it’s clear Democrat Obama lied to everyone and that shouldn’t be a surprise. Anyone that can think past a sound byte know his policies don’t work and should never have been suggested.
